Carlos Duarte de Chey - Biography

What is Tango?
The embrace. The cadence. The musicality. The pause. The conversation. The improvisation. The elegance.

Born as a porteño in Villa Urquiza, Buenos Aires, Carlos brings a lifetime of authentic experience to Argentine Tango as a dancer, choreographer, and master teacher.
Carlos’ lifelong relationship with tango culture, music and dance began early, from watching tango films and being taken by his parents to milongas in Villa Urquiza such as the “Club Inca”.Carlos began attending milongas as an amateur dancer, learning from the milongueros and Master teachers and friends, Orlando Paiva, Nito Garcia, Pepito Avellaneda, Rodolfo Dinzel, Puppy Castello and Eduardo Arquimbau.
With a background in Architecture at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) he developed a precise instinct for space and movement.In Buenos Aires he taught at Saverio’s studio, Escuela Argentina de Tango, Club Sunderland
, Confiteria Ideal and various rental studios around the city.
He currently teaches at Casa Eolia (Palermo) when he is in Buenos Aires.
He has performed at Porteño y Bailarin, Sin Rumbo, El Fulgor, La Nacional (Bs.As.), Confiteria Ideal, and others.
He is a regular at many of Buenos Aires most iconic milongas, where he lives part of the year, and he is a respected milonguero.He is the creator and organizer of “La Milonga de Gardel” and “Noche Porteña” in NYC, “two of the most established milongas in the U.S.”
Carlos has performed at Lincoln Center with some of the Forever Tango cast members, and also with The American Ballroom Theater.His credits also include tango choreographer for Peter and Wendy (at the New Victory Theatre, NYC) and Eco Porco, in collaboration with Director Lee Breuer. He was featured in “Vogue Magazine” May 2006In NYC he taught at Carnegie Hall and Fazil’s Studios, and he served as the lead tango instructor at Sandra Cameron Dance Studios.
He has taught throughout the U.S. (including Hawaii) and across Europe, including Russia.
He currently teaches in NYC together with Rengin, focusing on advanced classes across various studios and occasionally traveling outside the city to teach.His style blends traditional and modern tango, without losing the essence of the dance.
